Choosing the right boiler for your home

Combi, system or regular boilers

A combi boiler heats water on demand straight from the mains, so there's no hot water cylinder and no tank in the loft. It suits many flats and houses with one or two bathrooms and frees up the airing cupboard.

A system boiler heats a hot water cylinder, which can supply several taps and showers at once. It often suits larger homes with more than one bathroom in use at the same time. A regular (heat-only) boiler works with a cylinder and tanks in the loft and is common in older properties.

We'll tell you honestly which type suits your home. Sometimes staying with a system boiler is the better option, and sometimes a combi conversion makes more sense.

System to combi conversions

Converting from a system or regular boiler to a combi is one of the jobs we're asked for most. It involves removing the cylinder and any loft tanks, altering the pipework and fitting the new combi. The result is more space and hot water on demand.

Before recommending a conversion, we check your mains water pressure and flow rate, because a combi can only deliver hot water as well as the incoming supply allows.

Brands and warranties

We're approved installers for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Alpha. Approved installer status lets us offer extended manufacturer warranties: Alpha up to 13 years, Worcester Bosch up to 12 years and Vaillant up to 10 years. These are maximums and depend on the model and the manufacturer's terms, including annual servicing.

This manufacturer warranty is separate from our own 12-month workmanship guarantee, which covers the installation itself.

Location and controls

A new boiler doesn't have to go where the old one was. We also move and re-site boilers, including into the loft, if that suits your layout better. We can set up smart heating controls as part of the job; one customer had their Hive heating set up alongside a new boiler and gas hob.
